Study Background
Researchers at The Pennsylvania State University are studying how racial discrimination affects teens’ mental health.
Our researchers invite you to join Project SQUAD (Studying Questions of Underrepresented Adolescents’ Dynamics)! In this project, we want to examine how exposure to discrimination and other cultural stressors affect mental health in Black and/or Latiné youth.
Your teen may be eligible to participate if they are Black and/or Latiné (including multiracial), are 13-17 years old, and reside in the United States.
The study will consist of two visits and all study activities will be conducted virtually over Zoom. During the first visit, teenagers will answer online surveys and have the option to complete a virtual activity session with a friend of their choosing. However, they can choose to participate without a friend if they’d prefer. The teenager and their friend will each receive $60 for this visit. The second visit will only involve the teenager (not their friend) and will again include the completion of online surveys. The teenager will be compensated $70 for this second visit.

Teens can earn up to $130 for their participation ($60 for the first virtual activity and $70 for the follow-up surveys). Friends who join the first virtual session will receive $60
There is no cost for you/your teen to participate in our research study.
