Study Background
Can a study medication, delivered as skin patches, help with cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia?
This study is for patients who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia and are experiencing cognitive difficulties.
In this study, you will receive 10 days of active study medication and 10 days of placebo in a random order, as skin patches, during each of the 12-day treatment period. You will be completing procedures such as physical exams, electroencephalograms (EEG), blood and urine tests, urine drug screens, pregnancy tests (if applicable), and schizophrenia evaluations and interviews. You may be required to be admitted to an inpatient unit for the two treatment periods. The total duration of the study is estimated to be about 2.5 months.
Eventually, we hope that the findings of this study might be useful for treating symptoms of schizophrenia and improving people’s quality of life. Find out if you are eligible to participate today.

Additional Information
The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of study medication patches on thinking and mood symptoms of schizophrenia.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
- 21-55 years old
- Diagnosed with schizophrenia
- Taking a stable dose of antipsychotic medication (e.g., risperidone, olanzapine, aripiprazole) for at least 8 consecutive weeks
- Do not use substances (e.g., cannabis, cocaine, alcohol)
The entire study lasts about 2.5 months and is entirely in-person. If you are eligible and choose to participate, the study involves:
Screening: After completing a brief 10 to 15-minute phone screen to determine initial eligibility, you will be asked to come in for two in-person screening visits to confirm full eligibility.
Treatment: Following screening, you will complete two treatment periods of 12 days. During each period, you will receive 10 days of skin patches that contain either the study medication or a placebo, in a random order. Neither you nor the research staff will know whether you have the active medication or placebo on any given day. You’ll also be asked to do some assessments and activities each day.
You will be required to be onsite daily for the treatment periods, and you may be required to be admitted to an inpatient unit at the study site. A washout period of 6-14 days will separate the two treatment periods.
Procedures: The study involves procedures such as physical exams, electroencephalograms (EEG), blood and urine tests, urine drug screens, pregnancy tests (if applicable) and schizophrenia evaluations and interviews.
You will be compensated for your time while participating in the study, and you may receive travel reimbursement. If you decide to be on the inpatient unit during the treatment periods, which is recommended, you will be paid additional compensation for each full day you are on the unit.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study. We can offer reimbursement for transportation if needed.
