Brain Aging Research
Researchers at BIDMC want to learn more about the impact of type-2 diabetes on brain aging. Healthy volunteers with or without type-2 diabetes are needed for our study!
Fast Facts
55-85 Years Old
MRI Eligible
Generally Healthy, With or Without Type 2 Diabetes
Compensation Provided
Conducted in Boston, MA
Study Background
Diabetes can affect the brain in several different ways that add up over time. It can lead to neurological complications and sometimes problems with the central nervous system.
The purpose of this study is to learn more about the changes in the structure and function of the brain that occur in adults with diabetes as they get older and how these changes relate to cognition (thinking) and other markers of brain health.
This study uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to investigate brain plasticity (how the brain changes and learns through experience) in adults with type 2 diabetes. TMS is a noninvasive way of stimulating the brain through the scalp. TMS has been used for the past 20 years in neurology and psychiatry.
