Study Background

The Compass for Care study is a research project designed to test new digital programs to support family caregivers.

Are you an unpaid caregiver who spends at least 8 hours/week caring for a friend or family member with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia? If so, you may qualify to take part in Compass for Care, a nationwide study funded by the National Institutes of Health. We would like your help in testing online programs for caregivers and completing online surveys.

If you agree to participate in the study, you will be randomly selected by the survey technology to have access to one of two programs. Both programs are designed to assist caregivers. One focuses on well-being and the other on safety. There is no cost to you and you will be paid for your time. You may also find that taking part in this project is interesting and helpful to you.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research is to get feedback on Compass for Care, which are new online programs for people who spend at least 8 hours/week caring for a family member or friend with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Your feedback will help us make improvements to the programs so that caregivers will find them helpful and want to use them.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18+ years old
  • Caring for a friend or family member with Alzheimer’s or a related type of dementia
  • Willing to receive daily messages by text or email for 3 months
  • Have access to the internet (for example, by phone, laptop, or tablet)

Eligible caregivers will:

  • Be asked to answer questions online in a brief screener to see if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you’ll be asked to complete a more in-depth survey right after that.
  • Receive daily messages either by text or email for 3 months. Don’t worry, you don’t need to respond.
  • Complete as many brief web-based activities as you would like for 12 weeks, with new activities added each week.
  • Complete 4 online surveys over a 9-month period. In the surveys, we’ll ask you about how you’re doing as a caregiver and for your feedback on the daily messages and activities. Each survey will take about 10 minutes.

All study activities are online. No travel is required. You can do all parts of the study on any phone, laptop, or other Internet-enabled device at times that are convenient to you.

As a participant, you will receive up to $150 in Amazon.com or Walmart.com gift cards for your time.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
