Could a new journalling app help teens who are experiencing depression?

We are developing a new smartphone app called “Mirror.” This app is designed for journalling, and we are investigating how well it can measure teens’ moods and feelings. 

During this 4-week study, participants will either complete journalling activities in Mirror, complete journalling activities in a different smartphone app, or not complete journalling activities at all.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to investigate how the smartphone app “Mirror” can measure teens’ moods and feelings.

You or your teen may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 13-18
  • Experiencing symptoms of depression or have in the past
  • Willing to participate in a 4 week journaling trial
  • Have a smartphone
  • Able to obtain parental consent to participate

This entire study will last approximately 4 weeks and will be conducted entirely online.

Participants will complete an initial enrollment visit, where they will be assigned into one of three groups. Based on their group, participants may be asked to complete journalling activities in Mirror, complete journalling activities in a different smartphone app, or not complete journalling activities at all. Before and after the journaling activities, participants will also be asked to complete some surveys about how they are/have been feeling, and their opinions about journaling.

After 4 weeks, participants will complete post-participation surveys. 

Participants can receive up to $110 for their time and effort.
