The MINDER Study, led by Dr. Stephanie Carreiro at UMass Chan Medical School and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is working to develop a wearable device designed to support individuals prescribed buprenorphine. The goal is to use data from noninvasive sensors—like smartwatches and skin monitors—to identify when buprenorphine is taken, helping make treatment more effective and personalized.
To build and test this technology, researchers are inviting individuals who currently take buprenorphine (and have not changed their buprenorphine dosing in the past month) to participate. During a 6-hour visit at our Worcester, MA campus, participants will wear a smartwatch and small body sensors to track physiological changes while taking their regular dose of medication.

Additional Information
This study aims to determine if wearable devices can detect when buprenorphine has been taken, to ultimately create tools that improve comfort, safety, and outcomes for people undergoing treatment for opioid use disorder.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Currently prescribed buprenorphine for opioid use disorder
- Ages 18+
- Live within driving distance to Worcester, MA
Exclusion Criteria:
- Change in buprenorphine dosing in the past month
- Implanted medical devices (e.g., pacemakers, defibrillators)
- Currently using non-prescribed drugs
You will come to the UMass Chan Medical School campus for a 6-hour visit. You’ll wear a smartwatch and small sensors to monitor your heart rate, skin temperature, and movement while you take your regular dose of buprenorphine. You’ll also complete a few short health surveys. A second visit may be available if you’re interested.
You can receive up to $400 ($200 per visit). Parking is free, and we’ll provide a parking pass if needed.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
