Study Background

Our research team is seeking night shift workers without sleeping problems to help test a mobile app intervention aimed at improving symptoms of shift work disorder.
Shift work disorder (SWD) is a sleep disorder that commonly affects people working non-traditional schedules, like night shifts or rotating shifts. It can cause trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, excessive sleepiness, and lack of energy. Left untreated, SWD can increase the risk of work-related accidents, mental health concerns, and potential health problems.

The purpose of this research study is to test a mobile app light exposure intervention to improve symptoms of SWD. If you decide to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete two overnight stays at Henry Ford Medical Center in Novi, Michigan, and use a mobile app for two weeks.

Additional Information

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of a mobile app light exposure treatment on improving symptoms of shift work disorder.

You may qualify to participate in this study if you meet the following criteria.

Key Criteria:

  • 18 years or older
  • Work at least 3 night shifts a week
  • Have been working night shifts for at least 6 months
  • Willing to maintain a night shift sleep schedule for the duration of the study (cannot switch back to daytime sleep schedule on off-work nights)
  • No substance use disorder

The study involves 3 visits to the Henry Ford Medical Center in Novi, including 2 overnight stays.

The first visit is an hour-long intake visit to go through the informed consent form, set you up with an Apple Watch, and schedule your next 2 stays. Both overnight stays involve a saliva sample collection in dim light conditions.

During your first overnight stay, the research team will set you up with the mobile app and a light box to use at home for a 2-week treatment period. After 2 weeks, you will return to the lab for a second overnight stay, which will include another saliva collection, an exit interview, and 2 optional blood draws.

Participants will be compensated up to $840 for their participation in this study.
