Study Background

We want to better understand how young people make decisions about their health and interact with their environments.

Nicotine and tobacco products are common in many communities, and young people may be exposed to these products in different ways. Exposure to tobacco retailers and related environments can influence health behaviors and attitudes.

Previous research has shown that young people’s surroundings and social contexts can shape their decisions about tobacco use and other health behaviors. The purpose of this study is to better understand how the environments of teens and young adults relate to their health behaviors and attitudes, including tobacco exposure.

We hope the findings from this study will help inform strategies to promote healthier behaviors and reduce youth exposure to tobacco.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 16-25
  • Have never used a tobacco product, even once
  • Live in Ohio, California, North Carolina, or Connecticut
  • Own a smartphone and are willing to download an app for study participation
  • Have access to a device with a camera and microphone for online surveys

This study is 100% remote and involves online surveys and app-based tasks that can be completed on your smartphone over the course of 3 weeks.

The study begins with a brief, 15-minute online orientation session where we will explain the study and confirm eligibility.

Next, you will complete a 5–10 minute online baseline survey about your health behaviors, attitudes, and environment.

For the following 3 weeks, you will receive very short surveys on your smartphone 2–3 times per day through a study app. The app may occasionally record your GPS location for research purposes.

At the end of the study, you may be asked to complete a short 5–10 minute follow-up survey.

As a participant, you can receive up to $180 for your time and effort.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
