Study Background

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine are conducting a study in adults with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder to understand certain behaviors and how treatment with clozapine may help.

Our research aims to learn more about alternative treatments for individuals whose schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who may have difficulties with emotional regulation and managing stressful situations.

The findings of this study might be useful for improving treatment approaches and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with treatment resistant schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.

Additional Information

In this research study, we are trying to understand the way certain behaviors develops in people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. We aim to better understand how brain systems involved in behavior regulation, including dopamine pathways and circuits related to impulse control and emotional regulation, may contribute. Certain behaviors can be related to changes in these brain circuits, stress, inflammation, and life experiences, and we will measure these factors throughout the study. To do that, we are using clinical and behavioral assessments to guide us, providing treatment with clozapine, which is an antipsychotic medication, and comparing it with treatment as usual.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18 to 65 years old
  • Diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder

The entire study lasts about 24 weeks. Once enrolled, the study involves:

In the clinic: You will have regular study visits where you will complete assessments related to schizophrenia symptoms, behavior, and overall health. Each visit includes interviews, questionnaires, and clinical evaluations. Some visits may include blood draws, vital signs, and safety monitoring. You will receive either clozapine or treatment as usual based on random assignment, and study clinicians will monitor how you respond to treatment.

Participants may be compensated up to $950.00 if they complete all study visits. If they do not complete the study, we will pay them for each of the visits completed.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
