Study Background
Do you drink alcohol? If you are at least 18 years old and drink alcohol you may be eligible to participate in a paid research study at Brown University.
This study involves taking a medication (Doxazosin) to test its ability to reduce alcohol craving and drinking. This study also tests alcohol craving in the moment, when someone is reminded of alcohol while they’re feeling stressed. Stress is tested in this study with one dose of another medication (Yohimbine).
Participants will attend a screening session, start on a low dose of medication, and come in weekly to gradually increase their dose. There will be two sessions where participants will be exposed to reminders of their favorite alcoholic beverage. One of these sessions will use Yohimbine. There will be 12 visits total in the study, over the course of approximately 16 weeks. There will be 5 blood draws and 4 saliva collections.
Findings of this study will be used to understand how to reduce alcohol drinking by targeting the body’s stress system.
