Help Uncover How Technology Impacts Youth Well-Being

We’ve all heard the buzz about device use and social media impacting our kids’ wellness and mental health. Despite the research and news reports, experts are still figuring out if this digital world is helpful, harmful, or both. That’s why we’re launching a study to explore how kids’ digital habits, including social media and online games, tie into their mental wellness, physical activity, and sleep. Let’s solve this puzzle together!

Additional Information

This study is being conducted to better understand how adolescent’s use of technology, such as social media and gaming, affects their mental well-being, stress, sleep, and overall development. With ongoing concerns about digital engagement, TECHWISE aims to provide real-world insights that can help guide healthier technology use for kids and teens.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Youth 8-17 years old
  • Have a parent who is also willing to participate
  • Own a smartphone or tablet
  • Speak English
  • Live in the United States

Families who participate in the TECHWISE study, here’s what to expect:

  1. Learn & Consent: Parent and adolescent review study details and provide consent/assent.

  2. Install the Aura App: Both parent and adolescent install the Aura app. The youth must have their own dedicated device (smartphone or tablet).

  3. Complete Monthly Surveys: Parent and adolescent each complete one survey set at enrollment and once per month for 3 months (4 total). Each set takes about 30–45 minutes.

  4. Daily Check-Ins for Youth: Each day, the adolescent receives a short link with 4 quick questions about mood, stress, sleep, and activity.

  5. Fully Remote Participation: Everything is completed from home—no in-person visits or travel required.

Participating families may earn up to $200 for completing study activities.

  • Youth: Up to $100 for monthly surveys + up to $40 for daily questions.

  • Parents: Up to $60 for monthly surveys.
    Families can also earn $25 for each successful referral (up to $250).
    No travel is required, and participants receive free Aura app subscriptions during the study.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
