Study Background

The ARK Study: Affect Regulation in Kids

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by your emotions?

Adolescence can be a tough time, especially if you are someone who experiences feelings very strongly. For some people, these emotions can be overwhelming and difficult to manage, often leading to unhelpful behaviors. Our research study tackles this issue by seeking to understand the complex factors in day-to-day life that might put teens at higher or lower risk for dysregulated emotions and behaviors.

Teens ages 12-17 are invited to participate in this online study from anywhere in the U.S. Parental permission is required to participate. Help us find better ways to predict and prevent self-harm in teens by joining the ARK study today!

Additional Information

In this research study, we are trying to understand how emotional and behavioral dysregulation unfolds in daily life. We’ll assess how everyday environmental factors such as stress, sleep, and social contact influence teens’ thoughts feelings, and behaviors. We hope this will help us precisely predict risk of self-harm, as well as identify the most promising targets of intervention, and detect early warning signals in order to prevent self-harm.

You or your teen may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 12-17 years old
  • Experience strong or overwhelming emotions or have a history of self-injury
  • Can have a parent/guardian provide permission to participate
  • Have access to reliable internet on a device

  • An initial online assessment (1 hour)
  • Online surveys 4x a day for 60 days (3 minutes)
  • Check-in surveys every 2 weeks (5 minutes)
  • Follow-up surveys 3 months and 6 months after the initial 60 days (20 minutes)

Participants may receive up to $280 for completing the entire study. Additionally, we offer a safety planning session with participants and provide mental health resources as part of the study.
