Additional Information

In this research study, we are working to better understand depression in adolescents and young adults by examining how probiotic intake may influence brain function and the gut microbiome. The study focuses on how changes in gut bacteria may be related to brain activity, mood, and emotional processing in youth with depression. By measuring brain changes through MRI scans, along with biological samples and self-reported experiences, we aim to better understand the connection between gut health and depression. This research may help identify new supportive approaches that could complement existing treatments for depression in young people.

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 15–24
  • Diagnosed with depression
  • Currently taking an SSRI medication for depression for at least 8 weeks
  • Under the care of a primary care provider or mental health clinician
  • Fluent in English
  • Have access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer for virtual visits

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Current diagnosis of another DSM-5 mental health disorder (except anxiety or medically managed ADHD)
  • Use of probiotics, antibiotics, fermented foods, or certain supplements within the past month
  • Contraindications for MRI (such as metal implants or braces)
  • Current active suicidal ideation requiring hospitalization
  • Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant during the study

The study lasts approximately 8 weeks. Once enrolled, participation includes both in-person and remote activities.

In person: Participants will visit the UCSF Mission Bay campus twice—once at the beginning of the study and once at the end. During these visits, participants will complete MRI scans and study assessments.

From home: Participants will take either a probiotic or placebo twice daily for 8 weeks. They will also self-collect stool and saliva samples and complete online questionnaires about their mood and experiences throughout the study.
