Study Background
Researchers at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine are studying how vaping affects young adults’ health.
Vaping, also called using e-cigarettes, is popular among young adults. Many people think vaping is safer than smoking, but it can still expose users to harmful chemicals. These include metals and aldehydes, which may damage the lungs and affect how well a person can breathe.
In this study, we want to better understand how these chemicals affect lung health and breathing in young adults. We are also interested in learning about different vaping habits, such as how often people vape and what types of products they use. By studying both health and behavior, we hope to get a clearer picture of how vaping may impact the body.
The information we collect will help researchers learn more about the effects of e-cigarettes on lung health. This knowledge may help improve public health guidelines and support efforts to protect the long-term health of young adults. It may also help people make more informed choices about vaping.

Additional Information
In this research study, we are trying to understand how e-cigarette use affects lung health in young adults. We aim to better understand exposure to harmful substances like metals and aldehydes from vaping and how they impact the respiratory system. We will measure these exposures by collecting vape aerosol samples, as well as biological samples such as breath, saliva, blood, and urine, and assess lung function through pulmonary testing.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 21-25
- Vape most days of the week
- Willing to bring your e-cigarette to the study site
Exclusion Criteria:
- Currently pregnant
- One in-person visit where you will complete a questionnaire about your health and vaping behaviors
- Provide biological samples (breath, saliva, blood, and urine)
- Bring your e-cigarette device so we can collect a sample of the aerosol
- Complete a pulmonary function test to assess your lung health
Participants will receive $75–$100 in the form of a Visa gift card. If you successfully refer another person to the study, you can receive an additional $25 gift card, for a total of up to $125.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
