Study Background

Sleep plays an important role in how the brain stores and processes memories.

As we age, changes in sleep patterns can affect how well we think and remember information. Some older adults may notice mild memory challenges that go beyond normal aging. Researchers are interested in finding safe and simple ways to support brain health during this stage of life.

This study is exploring whether gentle sound cues played during sleep may help support memory and overall cognitive function. By learning more about how the brain responds during sleep, researchers hope to better understand ways to maintain brain health in older adults.

Additional Information

This study is being done to learn more about how sleep affects memory and thinking. Researchers are also exploring new ways to support brain health in older adults.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 60+
  • Diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
  • Experience memory problems (e.g., forgetting recent things, losing items)
  • Live in London, Ontario

Exclusion Criteria:

  • History of sleep disorders
  • Known stroke or transient ischemic attack
  • History of seizures
  • Untreated moderate or severe sleep apnea
    • Participants with well-controlled sleep apnea will be eligible to participate provided they are able to use their treatment device
  • Complete an online screening and a short phone interview
  • Take part in simple hearing and memory tests
  • Possibly complete an at home sleep screening
  • Attend five overnight visits at the sleep lab
  • Sleep while wearing a comfortable cap that records brain activity
  • Complete memory and thinking tasks before and after sleep

Yes, you will be compensated for your time. There will be a small monetary compensation for completing the full screening protocol of the study, including the online questionnaires, phone interview and, if needed, the at-home sleep apnea test. If you meet eligibility criteria, you will be compensated for completing each overnight visit.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
