Crohn's Disease
Research Study
People with Crohn’s disease often have an imbalance of gut bacteria, but it is not fully known if this causes or worsens their symptoms. Some early research suggests that transferring healthy bacteria from donors may help improve inflammation and symptoms. This study will compare two types of microbiota transplant capsules to see how well they restore healthy gut bacteria and improve outcomes in people with Crohn’s disease.

Additional Information
This study is being conducted to better understand Crohn’s disease and the role of gut bacteria, and to explore ways to improve symptoms, inflammation, and treatment outcomes.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Diagnosed with Crohn’s disease
- On a stable dose of Crohn’s medications for at least 3 months
- Between 18–89 years of age
Exclusion Criteria:
- Diagnosis of ulcerative colitis
- Recent or planned antibiotic use
- History of bowel resection surgery
Overall Duration
- This study lasts about 6 to 8 months.
In-Lab Activities
- Participants will complete at least 2 in-person visits.
- Visit 1 (Start of Study):
You will have a colonoscopy (which may be part of your regular care) to check for inflammation and collect small tissue samples. A blood sample will also be taken. - Treatment Assignment:
You will be randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to receive one of two microbiota transplant capsule treatments. - Visit 2 (About 8 Weeks Later):
You will return for a second colonoscopy to collect additional tissue samples and see how your gut bacteria have changed. Another blood sample will be taken.
- Visit 1 (Start of Study):
Researchers will collect data from colonoscopies, blood samples, and stool samples throughout the study.
At-Home Activities
- Participants will complete study tasks from home over several months.
- Provide stool samples and complete health check-ins at the following time points: baseline, 2, 4, 6, 8, 20, and 32 weeks
- Answer simple questions about symptoms and how you are feeling
- Each check-in takes about 10–20 minutes
Your data will be kept private and labeled with a code instead of your name.
Participants may receive compensation of up to $500 for their time.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
