Additional Information
This study is being conducted to evaluate whether apremilast (Otezla) can help change drinking behavior and support new approaches for alcohol use disorder treatment.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 21-65
- Drink alcohol often
- Able to take oral medications and willing to adhere to medication regimen
Participation begins with an in-person screening visit in New Haven, where you’ll complete questionnaires and a physical exam to determine eligibility. If eligible, you’ll meet with a clinician to develop personalized scripts based on emotional experiences, which will be used later in the study.
You’ll then take the study medication (either apremilast or placebo) twice daily for 28 days. During this time, you’ll attend three in-person laboratory sessions, each lasting about 9 hours, where you’ll complete guided imagery and self-administration tasks. You’ll also receive periodic check-ins and daily text prompts throughout the study.
At the end of the 28-day period, you’ll return for a final visit, followed by a follow-up appointment 30 days later, along with brief phone check-ins after the medication phase ends. All study visits take place in New Haven.
