Additional Information

This study is being done to learn how doula support can help pregnant people reduce or quit smoking. Researchers also want to better understand how this type of support may improve mental health and other experiences during pregnancy and after birth.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Currently in your first 20 weeks of pregnancy
  • 21-50 years of age
  • Latinx, Hispanic Black/African American, Asian American, Indigenous, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, or multiracial
  • Are smoking/have smoked cigarettes in the past 3 months
  • Communicate in English, live in California and can consent

If you choose to participate, you will complete online surveys, work with a trained doula throughout your pregnancy, and be invited to join a virtual group discussion after your doula support ends.

Overall Duration

  • Participation lasts throughout your pregnancy and continues until after your doula support is complete. The study includes several surveys during pregnancy and one group discussion after pregnancy support ends.

In-Person and Virtual Activities

  1. You will complete an online survey at the beginning of the study. The survey can be completed on your smartphone, tablet, or computer using a secure link and takes about 30 to 40 minutes.
  2. You will be matched with a doula who has special training in supporting pregnant people who smoke cigarettes. Your doula will provide support throughout your pregnancy and labor.
  3. You will have at least 5 visits with your doula. Visits can take place online or in person, depending on your preference and what works best for you.
  4. During your pregnancy, you will be asked to complete 3 additional online surveys. These surveys are similar to the first survey and each takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
  5. After your doula support is finished, you may be invited to participate in a virtual group discussion with other study participants. The discussion will take about 60 minutes and will focus on your experiences with smoking, pregnancy, mental health, and doula support.
