Research Study
Scientists know that our thoughts, feelings, and relationships are shaped by how the body and brain work together, but they still don’t fully understand how this affects pregnant women and parents of young children. The PAL Lab General Interest Study, conducted by the University of Notre Dame, will explore these experiences to learn what kinds of support can best improve mental health for families.

This study is being done to better understand how the body and brain work together to shape how people think, feel, and connect with others. Researchers still have questions about how these experiences affect pregnant women and parents of young children. This study aims to learn what kinds of support can improve mental health for individuals and families.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:

Women ages 18 or older

Currently pregnant or have a child younger than 18 months

Able to complete virtual or in‑person study activities in South Bend, IN
The length of the study depends on which activities you choose. Some options take only a few minutes online, while others may include one or more virtual or in‑person visits.
In‑Lab Activities
If you take part in an in‑person visit at the University of Notre Dame, you may:
Complete interviews or questionnaires about your thoughts, feelings, and daily experiences
Do simple computer tasks that help researchers understand how people think and react
Take part in activities with your child or partner, depending on the study option you choose
Some visits may include video or audio recording so researchers can better understand how people interact. Childcare, snacks, meals, and transportation support are available for in‑person visits.
At‑Home Activities
If you choose online or virtual options, you may:
Complete short online surveys
Join a virtual interview over video
Do simple tasks on your phone or computer
These activities are flexible and can be done at a time that works for you. Only the information you choose to share is collected.
Because participation is optional, compensation matches the participation type and time. Participants can earn anywhere from $15-$120 per person or $240 per couple.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
