Research Study

Researchers are conducting a research study to learn how digital technology can improve the understanding and monitoring of depression in adults. Participants will use a smartphone app and wearable activity tracker over approximately 8 weeks to help researchers better understand how changes in mood, sleep, physical activity, and daily routines relate to symptoms of depression.

Additional Information

Researchers want to better understand how information collected through smartphones and wearable devices reflects changes in depression symptoms over time. The findings may help improve future tools for monitoring mental health outside of traditional clinic visits.

 

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults ages 18 years and older
  • Currently experiencing symptoms of depression
  • Own a compatible smartphone with internet access
  • Able to read and speak English
  • Willing to wear a wrist-worn activity tracker during the study
  • Willing to complete daily and weekly questionnaires


Exclusion Criteria:

  • Currently hospitalized for a mental health condition
  • Unable to provide informed consent
  • Significant cognitive impairment that would prevent participation
  • Currently participating in another mental health research study involving digital monitoring
  • Unable or unwilling to use the study smartphone application

If you are eligible and choose to participate:

  • Complete a brief phone screening with the study team.
  • Wear the activity tracker throughout the 8-week study.
  • Complete brief daily mood check-ins and weekly mental health questionnaires using the study app.
  • Join a zoom session for a final online visit to complete follow-up questionnaires and participate in a brief interview about your experience.

If you are eligible and participate in this study, you may receive up to $300 for completing all required study activities over approximately 8 weeks. Compensation is provided after completed study visits, with additional payments for completing required weekly surveys and returning the wearable device.
