Psychosis
Research Study
Schizophrenia spectrum disorders can affect how people think, understand social situations, and interact with others. Researchers know that these challenges may change as people get older, but they do not fully understand how aging affects social thinking and brain function in people with psychosis. This study will examine social thinking, cognitive abilities, and brain activity in adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, adults experiencing early psychosis, and healthy adults to better understand these changes and help guide future treatments.

Additional Information
This study is being conducted to better understand how social thinking and brain function change with age in people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Researchers hope to learn more about these changes to help improve future treatments, social functioning, and quality of life for people living with psychosis.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
-
Living with psychosis (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder with psychotic symptoms)
-
Ages 35-75
-
No severe substance use disorders (excluding nicotine and cannabis)
Overall Duration
The study includes a phone screening followed by up to three study visits over several weeks, depending on which parts of the study you are eligible to complete.
In-Person and Remote Study Activities
First, you will complete a phone (or, if appropriate, in-person) screening to see if you are eligible for the study. If you qualify, you will complete a 3–4 hour remote visit (or an in-person visit if preferred) where you will review and sign the consent form, answer questions about your health and medical history, complete questionnaires, and perform computer-based tasks that measure thinking and memory.
Next, you will attend one in-person visit lasting about 3 hours at the research lab. During this visit, you will complete additional questionnaires and computer tasks that measure social thinking, memory, and other cognitive abilities.
Some participants will also be invited to complete a separate 2-hour study visit. During this visit, researchers will record your brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG), a safe and non-invasive procedure that uses small sensors placed on your scalp while you complete simple tasks and rest quietly.
Participants may receive up to $250 for completing study activities. Free transportation through Lyft may also be available for in-person study visits if needed. Snacks and coffee will be provided during study visits.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
