Study Background

Michigan Medicine is looking for individuals to participate in the Stimulation to Improve Memory research study.

We are seeking volunteers who have received a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or dementia of the Alzheimer’s type for a research study that uses cognitive rehabilitation and non-invasive electrical brain stimulation treatments.

A diagnosis is preferable, but we will also include individuals with subjective concerns without a diagnosis. There is no cost to you. In fact, you will be compensated for your time.

U-M researchers are testing a form of brain stimulation to see if it changes the way areas of the brain communicate and if it improves memory or thinking abilities.

 
 

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

  •  Must be 50+ years old

  • Diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, dementia of the Alzheimer’s type, or memory issues

  • Stable on relevant medications for at least 4 weeks

  • Fluent in English

  • Able to receive an MRI

  • No history of conditions such as epilepsy, seizure, multiple sclerosis, or moderate to severe Traumatic Brain Injury

  • No history of psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder

  • No impairments that significantly limit ability to see or hear

  • No significant history of alcohol or drug dependence

  • No recent major radiation exposure

Over the course of the study, you will have at least 8 visits. These will involve memory and thinking tests, fMRIs, PET scans, 5 back-to-back days of non-invasive brain stimulation, and optional blood draws. You may have the option to do additional treatment sessions.

You may receive up to $510 for your participation.

There is no cost for you to participate in the study.
