Long Covid
Research Study
Researchers at Mt. Sinai and UW–Madison are conducting a research study to better understand how Long COVID may affect brain activity, thinking, fatigue, and other symptoms. The study compares people with and without Long COVID while they complete cognitive tasks and undergo MRI brain imaging.
Fast Facts
Adults Experiencing Long COVID (brain fog, fatigue, or other symptoms as a result of a previous COVID-19 infection) for at least 3 months
25-65 Years old
Compensation
up to $250
Conducted in
Madison, WI
Additional Information
The purpose of this study is to understand how brain activity changes during thinking tasks in people with Long COVID. Researchers hope to learn more about the relationship between brain activity, cognitive performance, fatigue, sleep, and other Long COVID symptoms.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Are 25–65 years old.
- Have previously been diagnosed with COVID-19.
- Are experiencing Long COVID symptoms, such as brain fog, fatigue, or other ongoing symptoms related to a previous COVID-19 infection.
- Have had these symptoms for at least 3 months.
- Were not hospitalized because of your acute COVID-19 infection.
- Are not currently pregnant.
- Are not currently taking certain medications, including antiepileptic, antipsychotic, immunomodulatory, or opioid medications.
- Can safely undergo an MRI scan, meaning you do not have severe claustrophobia or non-removable metal implants that would make MRI unsafe.
- Are willing and able to travel to the University of Wisconsin–Madison for 2 study visits.
Overall Duration:
The study includes 2 in-person visits about 8 days apart, followed by 8 days of at-home monitoring after each visit.
Visit 1 – Health Assessment & Introduction:
During your first visit, the research team will:
- Ask questions about your health, symptoms, and medical history.
- Introduce you to the MRI scanner and what to expect during imaging.
- Teach you the cognitive, or thinking, tasks you will complete during the study.
- Have you practice the tasks before completing them in the MRI scanner at your next visit.
At-Home Monitoring – 8 Days:
After the first visit, you will wear a wrist-based activity monitor for 8 days. The monitor will:
- Measure your daily activity patterns.
- Prompt you to answer questions about your current symptoms.
- Ask questions about your sleep habits.
Visit 2 – MRI & Cognitive Testing:
About 8 days after your first visit, you will return to the study site. During this visit, you will:
- Complete questionnaires about your symptoms.
- Complete cognitive tasks while undergoing an MRI scan.
- The MRI will allow researchers to measure patterns of brain activity while you are completing the tasks.
At-Home Monitoring – Another 8 Days:
Following your second visit, you will again wear the wrist-based monitor for 8 days to track your activity patterns and answer questions about your symptoms and sleep.
Yes. Participants may receive up to $250 for completing study activities.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
