Additional Information

Researchers at Yale University are conducting the Change4Better (C4B) study to determine whether a smartphone app can help reduce the severity of problem gambling more effectively than standard treatment alone.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Are concerned about your gambling
  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have a smartphone with internet access
  • Are currently enrolled (or willing to enroll) in a treatment program that addresses your gambling

The main part of this study will last for 12 weeks, with follow-up visits monthly for 3 months.  This means the entire study will last about 6 months.  All study procedures will be conducted either virtually via Zoom, the secure survey platform and data storage called REDCap, in-person, or by phone.

Screening & Enrollment

  • After signing consent, you’ll meet with a member of the research team and complete questionnaires (about 90 minutes)

Random Assignment

  • You’ll be randomly assigned to either standard treatment as usual (TAU), or TAU plus the Change4Better (C4B) app

12-Week Main Study Period

  • Brief weekly check-ins with research staff to complete questionnaires
  • A more thorough assessment each month and at the end of the 12 weeks
  • If assigned the app, you’re encouraged to complete one module per week

3-Month Follow-Up

  • One virtual follow-up visit per month for 3 months

You will be compensated for participating. Participants can receive up to $415 for completing the entire study.
