Study Background

Researchers at the University of Maryland are conducting a study in adults with depression, ages 18-55, to learn more about the decreased motivation that comes with depression.

Many individuals with major depressive disorder experience reductions in motivation. This can make it difficult to do life’s daily tasks, let alone accomplish bigger goals.

The purpose of this study is to better understand factors that might contribute to reduced motivation and goal-directed behavior in major depressive disorder. In addition, we want to use smartphone-based surveys to collect information about how reductions in motivation affect daily life.

Our hope is that contributing to better understanding of symptoms of depression will provide paths to new ways of assessing depression, as well as targets for treatment.
