Menopause-Associated Psychosis Research Study

Researchers at Yale University are conducting a study on predictors and risk evaluation for menopause-associated psychosis.

Fast Facts

Women Ages 40-60 Transitioning to or in Early Menopause

Onset of Psychosis During Menopause Transition

Compensation Provided

Conducted in New Haven, CT

Study Background

Are you experiencing new-onset psychosis in your menopause transition?

Yale University is looking for women between the ages of 40-60 who are transitioning to menopause or have been in menopause for less than 3 years.

Some women find as they enter menopause that they start to have unusual thoughts or experiences, like delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech.

Our research seeks to better understand the risk factors that contribute to menopause-associated psychosis. In particular, we will examine hormone levels, symptomatology, past history, natural language processing, task performance, and electrophysiological and neuroimaging markers.

Additional Information

The goal of this study is to build an understanding of the risk factors leading to psychosis during the menopause transition.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Women between the ages of 40 – 60 who are transitioning to menopause or in menopause for less than 3 years
  • Psychosis spectrum diagnosis received during or within three years of the menopause transition (after age 35) OR new delusions, hallucinations or disorganized speech that started during or within three years of transition to menopause (after age 35)
  • Qualify as having psychosis or a psychosis risk syndrome

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Having a diagnosis of a psychosis spectrum disorder that was received before the menopause transition (prior to age 35)
  • Have dementia or any other neurological condition that could limit cognition or better explain symptomatology

Study visits occur as either a one-time interview or as repeated interviews and tasks at 5 time points over 2 years. The repeated visits consist of clinical interviews, computer games, and remote collection of hormone data via finger-stick blood sample collection kits that will be provided to you at no cost. For a smaller group of participants, there will also be periodic visits to the laboratory for brain-based measures.

Compensation is provided up to $1460 for your participation.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
