Study Background

We want to find out how to reduce stress, both for individuals with memory concerns and the people who care for them.

The goal of this clinical trial is to test the effectiveness of a treatment for stress/anxiety in older adults with memory concerns and their care partners.

The main questions it aims to answer are:

  1. Does the treatment effectively reduce anxiety and related symptoms among those with memory problems?
  2. Does the treatment effectively reduce the burden on care partners of people with memory problems?

Eventually, the findings of this study might be useful for treating anxiety and improving quality of life, both for individuals with memory concerns and the people who care for them. If you are experiencing stress and concerns about your memory, and you have a care partner who is willing to participate, you may be eligible for this study.

Additional Information

The purpose of this study is to assess the impact of a treatment on anxiety and stress in individuals with memory concerns and those already with a diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), Mild Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Participant Criteria:

  • 60+ years old
  • Experience stress or anxiety
  • Concerned about your memory
  • No unstable psychological conditions or treatment (i.e., medication or therapy initiated or changed within the last 2 months)
  • Not blind or deaf
  • No terminal illness or severe motor impairment
  • Able to read and speak English
  • Able to use a computer and smartphone
  • Have a care partner who is willing to participate in the program

Care Partner Criteria:

  • 18+ years old
  • Able to read and speak English
  • Able to use a computer and smartphone

Participants will complete six in-person visits, including a baseline assessment, two intervention sessions, and three follow-up assessments.

  • Baseline: The person with memory concerns will complete a neuropsychological test. Both you and your care partner will also complete a series of baseline questionnaires and be introduced to the smartphone application.
  • Intervention: Along with your care partner, you will be randomly assigned to one of two treatments focused on stress/anxiety. You will complete two intervention sessions guided by someone from the research team.
  • Phone Surveys: Using the smartphone application you learned about at baseline, you will complete three weeks of brief phone surveys and activities for one week before the intervention, one week between intervention sessions, and one week after the intervention.
  • Follow-up: At 1, 3, and 6-months after the intervention, participating pairs will complete follow-up cognitive testing and questionnaires.

Participants and care partners can receive up to $320 each for completing all study surveys and visits. Payment will be in the form of a gift card or other method dependent on study resources.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
