Study Background

Rutgers University is seeking to better understand the effects of cannabis use on driving.

The confidential study is testing how well an app for Android phones can detect driving features like turning, braking, and acceleration. We’re inviting people who smoke or vape medical cannabis to participate. Study results will be used to improve the Android phone driving app’s features.

Parts of this study (e.g., questionnaires, interviews) can be done virtually, and at the participant’s convenience. Other parts involve collecting biological samples (e.g., saliva samples), which will be provided to research staff (e.g., a sample kit is provided, and research staff pick up the sample at the person’s home).

  • For the first 7 days of the daily data collection, participants provide a saliva sample just before driving, along with completing a brief phone survey
  • After the 28 days of data collection, there is a follow-up visit (about 2 hours long), which is similar to the first assessment (interview, questionnaires)
