Researchers at Duke Health are conducting a study to understand how infants look at and learn from the patterns in the world around them.

Our goal is to explore how infants perceive and learn from the patterns in their surroundings. By examining these early interactions, we aim to gain insight into the developmental processes involved in understanding the world. This research is part of a broader study designed to compare how typically developing infants acquire knowledge about their environment with the learning experiences of infants who have developmental delays.
 

Through this study, we hope to uncover differences and similarities in learning patterns between these two groups. Understanding these variations can provide valuable information on the developmental trajectories of all infants and potentially inform interventions and support strategies for those with developmental challenges.

Additional Information

We aim to investigate how infants perceive and learn from their environment to understand developmental processes better. This study compares learning patterns between typically developing infants and those with developmental delays, providing insights that could inform future interventions and support strategies.

Your infant may qualify for this study if they meet the following criteria.

 Criteria For Your Infant:

  • Ages 5-7 months or 11-13 months
  • Has an older sibling diagnosed with autism
  • Born at full term (at least 37 weeks)
  • Live in the United States
  • The primary language spoken in the home is English

There are three virtual sessions for this study.

Session 1: Your infant will see a series of videos (20 minutes total) while we record how they respond. After the videos, we will ask you to complete surveys about your infant’s development (up to 60 minutes).

Session 2: 1 week later, we will ask your infant to watch the videos again (20 minutes).

Session 3: We will send you the surveys about your infant’s development (up to 60 minutes).

Compensation is provided up to $75 for your infant’s participation.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
