Online Native American Study

Researchers at the University of Virginia are conducting a research study with multiple parts that will be used to develop a digital intervention for Native American women and other people who can become pregnant to help them avoid a pregnancy affected by alcohol.

Fast Facts

Ages 18-44

Woman or Person Who Can Become Pregnant

Self-identify as Native American

Compensation Provided

Conducted Remotely in the US

Study Background

While over 3.3 million US women per month are at risk for AEP, risk for AEP among Native American (Native) women is higher, due to low contraception use and high binge drinking rates.

Alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP) can result in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) that cause lifelong costly disabilities from brain, organ, tissue, and neurological damage. AEP can be prevented by avoiding an unintended pregnancy or reducing alcohol intake by those who may become pregnant.

You are being asked to participate in this study with multiple parts because you are a Native American woman or person who can become pregnant, aged 18-44, living in one of the study regions. To participate in this study, you will complete a survey asking about you generally, and about your alcohol use, sexual choices, use of methods to prevent pregnancy, use of mobile phones, and interest in subsequent related studies. You may also be eligible for additional parts of the study.

All information gained from this study will be used to help create a digital intervention that can help people avoid having a pregnancy affected by alcohol in the future.

Additional Information

The purpose of this study with multiple parts is to gather information that will be used to develop a digital intervention for Native American women and other people who can become pregnant to help them avoid a pregnancy affected by alcohol.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18-44
  • Self-identify as Native American
  • Assigned female at birth
  • Read and speak English

If you participate in this study, you may be involved in different activities depending on which parts you are eligible for. These include:

  • Surveys: You’ll complete a survey about your background, alcohol use, sexual choices, pregnancy prevention methods, and mobile phone usage.

  • Focus Group Discussions: These sessions will last about 2 hours and can be done in person or over Zoom. You’ll discuss various topics related to the study.

  • Think-Aloud Sessions: These will last about 90 minutes over Zoom. During the session, you’ll share your thoughts while testing aspects of the study.

  • Pilot Testing of New Intervention Components: If you participate in this part, you’ll be randomly assigned to use one of the study’s intervention tools for 6 weeks. These may involve monthly phone calls, receiving pregnancy tests by mail, digital training, text messages, or access to a community message board.

You could be eligible to participate in one or more of these parts, depending on the study’s needs and your preferences.

  • SurveysYou will receive a $20 for completing the survey.

  • Focus Group Discussions: You will receive a $50 e-gift card.

  • Think-Aloud Sessions: You will receive a $50 e-gift card.

  • Pilot Testing of New Intervention Components:  You will receive up to $100.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
