Study Background

Researchers at Virginia Tech want to learn more about how e-cigarette use impacts the brain.

Through this research, we aim to determine whether e-cigarette use may impact brain processes and decision-making. This will help us better understand the long-term effects of cigarette and e-cigarette use on the brain. 

Participants in our paid research study will complete up to 4 in-lab sessions that include assessments, self-report questionnaires, and MRI brain scans. At each lab visit, participants may also be asked to provide biological assays such as breath or saliva samples.

Through this study, we hope to learn more about the impact of e-cigarette use on brain processes and decision-making.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 21-55 
  • Currently vape
  • Not currently trying to quit
  • Willing to abstain for at least 8 hours
  • Have regularly used e-cigarettes for at least 5 years
  • No attempts to quit in the past 5 years lasting longer than a few days
  • Have not used cigarettes in the past 5 years
  • Able to undergo an MRI (no metal implants or severe claustrophobia) 
  • Have not had a head injury with loss of consciousness more than 10 minutes

Participants will complete up to 4 in-person study visits. The intake session will include the completion of assessments and questionnaires, as well as a collection of biological assays (such as breath, urine, and/or saliva samples). After the initial session, participants may be eligible for up to 3 follow-up visits during which they may be asked to complete additional assessments, questionnaires, and an MRI scan, as well as provide additional biological assays. Participants may be asked to abstain from smoking or vaping for a minimum of 8 hours prior to the MRI scanning sessions.

Participants may receive up $458 in compensation.

Participants will be compensated at a rate of $20 per hour for tasks completed outside the MRI scanner and $25 per hour for tasks completed inside the scanner. Those who complete all of the study sessions will earn a $50 bonus. Additionally, individuals who live outside Roanoke City will receive compensation for travel time at a rate of $20 per hour.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
