Study Background

We want to find out more about how culture and family influence adolescent brain development, and how the adolescent brain plays a role in adolescents’ academic, social, and emotional development.

Over three years, parents and adolescents will complete online surveys four times, each being one year apart. In these surveys, parents and adolescents will be asked questions related to culture, family, and well-being. Adolescents will also complete an initial fMRI scan, as well as a follow-up scan in 3 years. During the MRI scan, adolescents will play a series of social and cognitive tasks in the scanner.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study  to investigate how culture and family influence adolescent development.

You and your child may qualify for the study if they meet the following criteria.

Participant Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 12-14
  • In middle school
  • Right-handed
  • Able to undergo an MRI (no metal in the body (including metal braces) or extreme claustrophobia)
  • Able to attend visits in-person in downtown Chicago

Parents and adolescents will come in person to our lab in downtown Chicago. During the lab visit, adolescents will complete a fMRI scan for 90 minutes. Then, there will be a follow-up scan in 3 years.

In addition, both parents and adolescents will complete online surveys 4 separate times, each being one year apart. Each survey will take about 50 minutes to complete.

Participants can receive up to $360 for completing all study activities. Each time, participants will get $100 for the in-person fMRI scan and $40 for online surveys. Participants will also get a 3D print of their brain and other prizes such as power bank and stress ball.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
