Remote South Asian Ancestry Study

Researchers at Stanford Medicine are partnering with OurHealth, a nonprofit research initiative, to advance cardiovascular research within the South Asian community.

Study Background

OurHealth is a nonprofit research initiative dedicated to advancing cardiovascular research within the South Asian community. By inviting South Asian-identifying individuals to share their clinical information, DNA samples, and personal insights, OurHealth seeks to bridge critical knowledge gaps and foster a deeper understanding of cardiometabolic health disparities.

South Asians face a heightened risk of cardiometabolic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Despite this, they have been significantly underrepresented in genetic research. In the U.S., South Asian ancestry is recognized as a risk-enhancing factor for cardiovascular disease. OurHealth aims to address this disparity by building a robust cohort of South Asian participants whose survey and genomic data will provide crucial insights into disease risk factors specific to this population.

By participating in this study, you can help shape the future of cardiovascular health for the South Asian community and beyond.

Additional Information

This study is being conducted to address the disproportionately high rates of cardiometabolic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, among individuals of South Asian ancestry. Despite this elevated risk, South Asians have historically been underrepresented in genetic and cardiovascular research. By creating a dedicated cohort and analyzing survey and genomic data, the study aims to fill critical knowledge gaps, improve our understanding of disease risk in this population, and ultimately contribute to better prevention and treatment strategies.

You may qualify for a study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18+

  • Ancestry identified as being from a South Asian country, such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka

  • Comfortable filling out surveys in English

  • Live in the United States

If you participate in this study, you will share information through surveys completed in the OurHealth participant portal. Some participants may also receive a saliva collection kit to provide a DNA sample. Your survey responses and sample will be used to study genetic and clinical factors that influence cardiovascular health in South Asians.

The study is entirely virtual, and you will have opportunities to stay involved over time, including completing additional surveys, participating in new research studies, and using tools like apps to share more data.

Participants in this study will not receive monetary compensation.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
