Study Background
The goal of this study is to determine if combining a sleep improvement intervention with a personalized physical activity program results in better knee pain management for adults aged 50+ with knee osteoarthritis.
Knee osteoarthritis can cause persistent pain and discomfort, which can significantly impact your daily life. Many adults aged 50+ experience difficulties with movement and sleep, which can worsen symptoms. This study aims to explore how improving sleep through a sleep intervention app, combined with a personalized physical activity program, may help manage knee pain and improve overall well-being. By participating in this virtual study, you will be part of a groundbreaking research effort designed to improve treatment options for people with knee osteoarthritis.
This study is entirely virtual, meaning you can participate from the comfort of your own home. You will receive an activity monitor watch that tracks your movement and sends questions about your pain, mood, fatigue, and other symptoms over a seven-day period. Based on your initial participation, you’ll be randomly assigned to either a physical activity program alone or a combined program with the sleep improvement intervention.

Additional Information
This study is being conducted to find out whether adding a sleep improvement intervention to a personalized physical activity program can improve knee pain management and overall health outcomes in adults aged 50+ with knee osteoarthritis.
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Ages 50+
- Diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis and have had pain for at least 3 months
- Have sleep difficulties (ex. difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early)
- Currently doing less than 75 minutes per week of vigorous intensity or 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week
- No diagnosis of a systemic, inflammatory musculoskeletal disorder (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis)
- No irregular sleep-wake schedule (e.g., shift work schedule)
- If taking pain or sleep medications, had no change in prescription in the previous three months and are willing to make no other changes to medications for pain or sleep during the active study period
- Have access to a reliable, internet-connected device like a laptop, computer, tablet, or phone
If you participate, you will complete an online survey and wear an activity monitor for 7 days, tracking your movement patterns and answering questions about your pain, fatigue, and other symptoms. Based on your initial data, you will be randomized to either a personalized physical activity program or a program that also includes a sleep improvement intervention. Over the course of the study, you will engage in online meetings with a health coach and track your progress with additional surveys and activity monitoring sessions.
As a participant, you will receive $100 for completing each data collection period, including the baseline, mid-program, end-of-program, and follow-up assessments at 6 and 12 months. Full participation can earn you a total of $500.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
