Study Background

Researchers at Temple University are conducting a research study to assess how children’s sleep, eating, and activity behaviors affect their growth.

The study also assesses how hormones that regulate sleep and the environment in which children live affect these behaviors and growth.

All participating families will be compensated and provided with summaries of current recommendations for sleep, eating, and activity behaviors in children at the end of the study.

Additional Information

Our study aims to assess how children’s sleep, eating, and activity behaviors affect their growth. Our study also assesses how hormones that regulate sleep and the environment in which children live affect these behaviors and growth.

Better understanding all of this can help us develop more effective programs to promote children’s health and wellbeing.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Your child is between the ages of 5-8 years old
  • You are the child’s primary caregiver and at least 18 years old
  • No diagnosable sleep disorders

If you are interested, the study team will also assess your child’s height and weight, and will speak with you about your child’s developmental and medical history to determine if your child is eligible.

Children will complete five 10-day assessments (baseline, 4, 8, 12, and 16 months) during which the following will be measured: sleep, eating and activity behaviors, measures of the home and neighborhood environment, and anthropometrics (height, weight, and adiposity). Families may also choose to allow their child to provide saliva samples to assess a hormone related to sleep (melatonin).

Compensation up to $550 is provided for participation in this study.

There is no cost for your family to participate in this study.
