Grape Seed Extract Research Study

Researchers at the Illinois Institute of Technology are conducting a study to determine whether a lower dose (150 mg/day) of a grape seed extract supplement called MegaNatural BP® can help lower elevated blood pressure, improve blood vessel function, and affect insulin activity.

Study Background

MegaNatural BP® GSE on Blood Pressure and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common health issue that can increase the risk of heart disease and other serious conditions. Researchers have been studying natural ways to help manage blood pressure, and one promising option is a supplement made from grape seed extract. In earlier studies, people who took 300 mg per day of this supplement—called MegaNatural BP®—saw improvements in their blood pressure. The researchers leading this new study were also involved in those earlier studies and are now exploring whether a lower dose of the grape seed extract might still be effective.

This study will test a daily dose of 150 mg of MegaNatural BP® to see if it can help lower blood pressure in people with elevated levels. Researchers will also look at how the supplement affects how well blood vessels function and how the body responds to insulin, compared to a placebo. The goal is to find out whether this natural supplement can support heart and metabolic health in a safe and effective way.

Additional Information

This study is being done to find out whether a lower dose of a grape seed extract supplement, MegaNatural BP®, can help lower blood pressure and improve blood vessel function and insulin activity in people with elevated blood pressure.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Have elevated blood pressure: (120-140 mmHg systolic and <90 mmHg diastolic)
  • Ages 35-60
  • Not taking medications for blood pressure or diabetes

If you participate in the study, here is what you can expect:

  1. Screening Visit – You will visit the Clinical Nutrition Research Center (CNRC) to see if you qualify for the study.

  2. Blood Pressure Cuff Fitting Visits (2 visits) – You will be fitted with an ambulatory blood pressure monitor to track your blood pressure over time.

  3. Study Day Visits (4 visits) – Across six weeks, you will return for four main study visits where researchers will:

    • Collect blood samples to measure how your body processes insulin.

    • Use ultrasound to assess the flexibility of your blood vessels, an important factor in blood pressure control.

  4. Throughout the Study – You will take either the grape seed extract supplement or a placebo daily and follow study instructions.

In total, you will visit CNRC seven times over the six-week period.

Yes, you will be paid for being in this research study. Compensation is provided after each completed study visit and depends on following the study procedures. If you complete all study visits, you will receive a total of $535.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
