Study Background
This study explores how medicinal cannabis use may impact your health over time.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins are conducting a national study to better understand the effects of cannabis when used for therapeutic purposes. The study is looking for adults who plan to start using medicinal cannabis in the next month and have not used cannabis or related products recently.
Participation involves completing online surveys over a one-year period, with the potential to be invited to additional surveys later. Your responses will help researchers learn how cannabis use relates to health and wellness outcomes over time.

This study is being done to understand how starting medicinal cannabis use affects overall health and well-being over time.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Adults planning to use cannabis/CBD for therapeutic purposes (e.g., sleep, anxiety, chronic pain) within the next month
- Have little to no past-year cannabis/hemp use
- Able to speak, read, and write in English
- Have access to an internet-compatible device
- Willing to provide a back-up source of contact to the study team for study-related communication
- Do not intend to move to a different country in the next year
- Have no plans to undergo major surgery in the next year
This study is fully remote:
You’ll complete a brief screening process to confirm eligibility.
Once enrolled, you’ll complete online surveys at four time points: when you join the study, and then again at 1, 3, and 12 months after you begin using medicinal cannabis.
Each survey takes about 50–60 minutes. You may also be invited to participate in additional sub-studies.
You may receive up to $100 in gift cards for completing all study surveys. Additional incentives may be available if you’re invited to and take part in sub-studies.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
