Depression Research Study

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin are conducting a study on brain biomarkers to better understand treatment for depression.

Study Background

This study is testing whether brain activity can help predict who will benefit most from the antidepressant sertraline (Zoloft).

Depression affects millions of people, but not everyone responds the same way to medication. This research study is designed to discover brain-based markers, measured with MRI and EEG, that may help doctors choose the best treatment for each individual.

By looking at how the brain functions before and during antidepressant treatment, researchers hope to improve the process of matching patients with the right medication more quickly and effectively.

Additional Information

This study aims to find brain activity patterns that can predict how someone with major depression will respond to treatment with sertraline (Zoloft).

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults experiencing symptoms of depression (e.g., low mood, loss of interest, sleep changes)
  • Not currently taking antidepressants
  • Interested in starting treatment for depression
  • Not currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant soon
  • No history of substance use disorders
  • Able to undergo an MRI (no metal implants or devices in the body)
  • No treatment-resistant depression (having tried an antidepressant during current depressive episode that proved unsuccessful)
  • Willing to attend 11 study visits in Austin, TX, including MRI, EEG, clinical assessments, and follow-ups
  • Ages 18-65

If eligible, you will complete about 11 study visits. These include an intake and online questionnaires, a 2-hour MRI, a 2.5-hour EEG session, and a baseline assessment before starting sertraline prescribed by a study psychiatrist. You will then complete follow-up clinical assessments at weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8, either in person or via secure video call.

Participants can receive up to $750 for completing all study visits. Payment is provided per visit, with partial compensation if only some visits are completed. Participants will also receive free images of their brain.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
