Diabetes Risk Research Study

Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin are conducting a study on how social factors influence the risk of developing diabetes in adults at high risk for the condition.

Study Background

This research explores how everyday life experiences and biological measures interact to affect diabetes risk.

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in the U.S., and many people are at risk without knowing it. Researchers at UT Austin are studying how social determinants of health, like stress, access to nutritious food, and community resources, might influence blood sugar regulation and diabetes development.

As part of this study, researchers will use a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to better understand how participants’ blood sugar changes over time. By collecting this information, the team hopes to find new ways to help prevent diabetes and support people before they receive a diagnosis.

Additional Information

This study aims to better understand how social and biological factors contribute to the risk of developing diabetes, so we can identify early prevention strategies.

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults at risk for diabetes with no official diagnosis
  • Have a parent who has diabetes
  • Can have pre-diabetes or be on a GLP-1 (e.g., Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro) for weight loss
  • Not currently pregnant
  • Have not been diagnosed with type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes
  • Willing to travel to the UT Austin campus to take a 2-hour glucose test, wear a continuous glucose monitor for 10 days, and keep a food diary
  • Ages 18+

If eligible, you’ll complete an oral glucose tolerance test, which involves drinking a sugary drink and having your blood drawn every 30 minutes for two hours. You’ll then wear a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for 10 days and complete a short food diary. After returning the CGM, you’ll have a two-week follow-up visit.

Participants will receive a total of $105 for completing the study steps. You’ll also receive snacks, a water bottle, free blood work with results, and a consultation with a nurse. Transportation is not provided.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
