Study Background
Investigating How Vaping and Cannabis Use Affect the Body
This research study at Roswell Park is focused on understanding how nicotine and cannabis products impact young adult users. Researchers are measuring levels of nicotine, cannabis, and related toxicants in blood and urine, while also exploring patterns of use and health behaviors.
Each study session lasts about one hour and includes a few brief questionnaires, a urine sample, and a blood draw. Participants will answer questions about their health, substance use habits, and product preferences. A certified phlebotomist will collect a small blood sample (about two teaspoons), and the urine sample will be provided in a private setting—similar to standard drug or pregnancy tests. These insights will help researchers learn more about how vaping and cannabis use affect the body and support future public health efforts.

Additional Information
This study is being done to better understand how young adults use nicotine and cannabis, and how these behaviors relate to levels of harmful substances in the body. Researchers are comparing three groups: individuals who primarily use e-cigarettes, individuals who primarily use cannabis, and individuals who use both. The goal is to study differences in exposure to toxicants and carcinogens.
You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- 18-25 years old
- Use any type of cannabis product and/or e-cigs containing nicotine
- Not currently pregnant
If you participate, you’ll complete one in-person study session that lasts about an hour. The visit can take place either at Roswell Park or in our mobile lab, which we can bring to you. During the session, you’ll:
Answer brief questionnaires about your nicotine and cannabis use
Provide one urine sample (similar to a standard drug or pregnancy test)
Give one small blood sample collected by a certified phlebotomist
It’s quick, confidential, and designed to help researchers learn more about how these substances affect young adults.
Yes! Participants will receive up to $50 in cash for completing the study. This includes:
$25 for answering the questionnaires
$25 for providing a blood and urine sample
Compensation is provided at the end of your one-hour session. Free parking is available, and the mobile lab can come to you for added convenience.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
