Study Background

Researchers at Cal Poly State University are conducting the ENRICH study in pregnant women to understand heart health, how it changes during pregnancy, and how supportive home visitation services can improve it.

Heart health during pregnancy and the factors that influence it are shaped by daily behaviors, stress, and access to supportive resources. Many pregnant individuals experience challenges that affect their long-term cardiovascular well-being. The ENRICH study aims to better understand how enhanced home visitation services, including heart health education and consistent support, can promote healthier outcomes for parents and their families. We are also interested in learning how early interventions during pregnancy can help families build healthier trajectories and reduce the risk of chronic disease later in life.

Eventually, the findings from this study may help improve programs that support pregnant individuals and strengthen the long-term heart health of families.

Additional Information

In this research study, we are trying to understand how heart health develops during pregnancy and the factors that influence it. We aim to better understand how behaviors, stress, and access to resources affect the long-term heart health of pregnant individuals. Heart health is connected to daily routines, physical measures, and the support people receive, and we will assess all of these. We also want to see whether enhanced home visitation services can help improve heart health and overall well-being. To do that, we are using information from health research to guide us and providing educational activities and support that can promote healthier outcomes for parents and their families.

You may be eligible for the ENRICH study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18 years or older
  • Currently pregnant
  • Speak English or Spanish
  • Live in Kings County, CA
  • Interested or enrolled in home visitation services

The entire ENRICH study lasts 2 years. Once enrolled, participation involves:

At home visits:
You will receive personalized home visits from trained health advocates. During these visits, you will complete assessments related to heart health, participate in child screenings, and receive resources to support your health and your baby’s health.

Virtual visits and check-ins:
You will complete three video calls with the research team to collect measurements, such as weight, and to complete surveys. In addition, there will be two brief check-in phone calls to provide support and track progress.

Educational support and resources:
Through the home visitation program, you will receive heart health education, guidance on healthy behaviors, and connections to resources in your community.

Participants in the ENRICH study may receive up to $405 in total compensation, with $100 at study entry, $15 when their child is 6 months old, $125 when their child is 12 months old, $15 when their child is 18 months old, and $150 when their child is 24 months old.

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
