Vaping & Smoking
Research Study
People are increasingly using e-cigarettes, especially those with cooling flavors, but we don’t fully understand how these flavors affect user experience or potential for addiction. This is important because flavoring may influence how appealing and habit-forming e-cigarettes are. This study will examine how adults respond to different cooling flavors in nicotine e-cigarettes, including how they feel, how much they like them, and their effects on the body.

In-Lab Activities
Participants will complete a total of four in-person visits in the New Haven area. The first visit (about 2 hours) is an intake visit to see if you are eligible. During this visit, you will provide a urine sample, review your medical and nicotine use history, and complete health questionnaires.
If eligible, you will attend three lab visits, each lasting about 4–5 hours. During each visit, you will try six different nicotine e-liquids that may have cooling flavors. After each sample, you will answer questions about how you feel and what you think of the product. Researchers will also collect saliva samples and measure your blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels. There will be short breaks between each sample. At the end of each visit, you will have time to use any of the e-liquids again.
Participants can receive compensation for their time, with the opportunity to earn up to $510 for completing all parts of the study. Participants will also receive payment after each lab visit. Transportation support or rideshare services may be available after the first visit if needed.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
