Study Background

Did you know that women develop alcohol use problems more quickly and suffer a broader range of adverse alcohol-related health consequences than men? Yet, due to stigma, shame, and caretaking responsibilities, women are less likely to receive alcohol treatment.

Our research aims to understand how physical activity can help women cope with stressors in early recovery. Participation in this study may help researchers find ways to help women in alcohol treatment.

Additional Information

Our study aims to understand how physical activity may benefit women in alcohol treatment.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Female
  • 18-65 years old
  • Started treatment for alcohol use (i.e. therapy, counseling, and/or medication) in the past couple of months

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Eating disorders
  • Symptoms of psychosis
  • Pregnancy
  • Medical problems that would prevent you from engaging in physical activity

The study takes place over the course of a year.

You would be randomly assigned to one of two programs:

  • In the first program, you would use a Fitbit that the study gives you and complete a daily set of brief questions on a smartphone app during the first 3 months.
  • In the second program, in addition to the Fitbit and app questions, you will also receive 6, brief phone or Zoom sessions with a study counselor.

After these 3 months, you will meet with a study staff person for follow-up interviews every 3 months (at 3-, 6-, 9- and 12-months), and can receive up to $1140 for participating in all the study activities.

The initial steps will assess whether you may be eligible to participate. If you are eligible and choose to participate in the study, your involvement will also include a finger stick blood test called a pETH test at all assessments, a pregnancy test, and a 6-minute physical activity test at the baseline and follow-ups.

You will be compensated up to $1150 and receive a free Fitbit for participating in this study.

There will be no cost to participate in our research study.
