Additional Information
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Generally healthy
- Assigned male sex at birth
- 18 to 35 years old
- You are able and willing to abstain from all sexual activity for 17 days
- You live in or are willing to travel to Chapel Hill, NC
- The study consists of 11 to 21 test visits spanning over the course of 6 months.
- Participants will receive a lab-made strain of gonorrhea through an inoculation procedure. This involves using a very small tube called catheter to place a specially prepared fluid with gonorrhea into the urethra (opening) of the penis. The procedure itself lasts less than one minute.
- All participants will receive two doses of the meningitis B vaccine (BexseroTM), one dose of the standard flu vaccine, and one dose the standard tetanus and diphtheria vaccine. All vaccines have been approved by the FDA.
- Half of the participants will be randomized to receive 2-dose series of BexseroTM prior to the primary study procedure.
- The other half will receive the BexseroTM vaccines after the primary study procedure.
- Following the primary study procedure, participants will come to our research clinic every morning for up to 10 days to provide urine samples and be evaluated for signs of gonorrhea infection.
- If at any point during those 10 days an infection is suspected or you decide you would like to be treated, oral antibiotics will be administered. The antibiotics administered are 100% effective in clearing the gonorrhea germ from the body.
- All participants are treated with antibiotics on day 10 even if you do not develop symptoms.
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
