Study Background

Fibromyalgia is a chronic health disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and tenderness in specific areas of the body. It is a complex condition that affects the central nervous system, causing amplified pain signals and heightened sensitivity to stimuli.

Managing fibromyalgia requires a multidisciplinary approach involving medication, lifestyle modifications, and emotional support to alleviate symptoms and improve well-being.

The purpose of this research study is to understand how specific brain networks are associated with chronic pain. More specifically, our researchers want to know whether finding an underlying mechanism of hypersensitivity in the brain could lead to better treatment approaches in the future. Therefore, in order to make more accurate comparisons, we are enrolling both individuals living with fibromyalgia and healthy volunteers.

Additional Information

The purpose of this research study is to learn more about the underlying brain mechanisms of people living with fibromyalgia.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Fibromyalgia Participants:

  • 19-75 years old
  • Right-handed
  • Diagnosed with fibromyalgia
  • Willing to limit the introduction of any new medications or treatments for control of fibromyalgia symptoms for the duration of the study

Healthy Volunteers:

  • 19-75 years old
  • Not diagnosed with fibromyalgia
  • Not diagnosed with a chronic or psychiatric disorder

AIM 1: Participation in this portion of the study will consist of a screening visit, a 14-day observation period, a behavioral session with EEG (electroencephalogram), and an EEG/MRI session.

AIM 3: Only female participants with fibromyalgia will be enrolled in this portion of the study. Participation will consist of a screening visit, a 14-day observation period, a behavioral session with EEG, and 5 brain stimulation treatments over the course of one week. After the first 5 treatments, participants will undergo an EEG/MRI visit followed by an additional week of 5 brain stimulation treatments and a second EEG/fMRI.

Compensation is provided for your time.

Participants in Aim 1 (healthy volunteers and participants with fibromyalgia) are compensated up to $294.

Participants in Aim 3 (female participants with fibromyalgia) are compensated up to $464.

There is no cost for you to participate in this study.
