Study Background

Help researchers learn more about a new treatment aimed at helping veterans reduce cigarette & cannabis use. 

If you are a veteran who regularly smokes cigarettes and uses cannabis, and you are interested in quitting or reducing, you may qualify to join. Researchers at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System are conducting a research study designed to examine how varenicline can help.

Your participation in this research may inform future treatment approaches for veterans addressing their substance use. Join our compensated study today!

Additional Information

This research study aims to determine if veterans who use both cannabis and tobacco are able to reduce cannabis and tobacco use after receiving varenicline.

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Smoke cigarettes regularly
  • Use cannabis regularly
  • Interested in quitting or reducing cannabis & tobacco use
  • Veteran
  • 18+ years old
  • Body weight >110 lbs and BMI between 18-35
  • If able to become pregnant, willing to use birth control during the study

 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Lifetime history of Bipolar I or II Disorder, Schizophrenia, or other psychotic disorder
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors in the past 6 months
  • Other substance use disorders (besides tobacco or cannabis) in the past 60 days
  • Significant medical disorders, cardiovascular disease, or cerebrovascular disease in the past 6 months

If eligible, this 12-week study involves:

  • Screening visit
  • Randomization into one of two study groups
  • Receiving Chantix (varenicline)
  • Study visits once a week for 12 weeks
  • One follow-up visit post-treatment

Compensation up to $375 is provided for your time.
