Research Study Background

This study will examine the neurobiological basis of reading difficulties in school-aged children and the effectiveness of a computerized reading intervention program.

Through this study, our researchers will assess reading and cognitive skills and evaluate how these difficulties relate to brain anatomy and function.

Additional Information

This study will examine the neurobiological basis of reading difficulties in school-aged children and the effectiveness of a computerized reading intervention program.

Eligible participants will be 8-12 years old and with a history of reading difficulties. Since the reading intervention is a computer-based training program, participants will be expected to have access to a computer at home and be able to independently complete a series of computer games. Additionally, children and their parent/guardian will be expected to complete two in-person visits at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.

Participation will consist of four parts: 1) a pre-intervention assessment at Kennedy Krieger, 2) 8 weeks of online reading training at home, 3) a post-intervention assessment at Kennedy Krieger, and 4) a 3-month follow-up assessment at Kennedy Krieger.

  • The pre- and post-intervention assessments will include an on-site visit to Kennedy Krieger Institute for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scan and assessments of reading and cognitive skills.
  • The 8-week online reading training will be completed on the child’s personal computer through our website. Children will complete three 20-30-minute sessions per week.
  • The 3-month follow-up assessment will include a shorter on-site visit to Kennedy Krieger Institute during which children will complete select reading and cognitive assessments.

  • Participants will be compensated up to $182 for completing all study components.
  • Parents/caregivers will receive a report of their child’s performance on the pre-intervention assessments.
  • Parents/caregivers will receive a radiology report from the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.

There is no cost for you to participate in this study.
