Study Background
The University of Minnesota is looking for individuals to participate in a clinical research study on borderline personality disorder. Our study is conducting an investigational treatment for individuals with traits of borderline personality disorder called neurofeedback training. The purpose of this study is to see if training your brain to think of happy thoughts can reduce symptoms of borderline personality disorder.
If eligible, you will attend 4 sessions. The 1st and 4th sessions will be in-person and can be split up into multiple study visits. The 5th visit is optional to complete. They will involve completing questionnaires about yourself and completing computerized tasks. In the 2nd and 3rd visits, you will undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and complete neurofeedback training and other separate activities.

Study Background

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria.

- Have Traits of Borderline Personality Disorder
- 17-45 Years Old
- Must not have Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or Schizophrenia
Once enrolled, this clinical research study involves:
You will attend 4 sessions. The 1st and 4th sessions will be in-person and can be split up into multiple study visits. There will be additional visits if needed. They will involve completing questionnaires about yourself and completing computerized tasks. In the 2nd and 3rd visit, you will undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and complete neurofeedback training and other separate activities.
This study is independent of the family’s current medical and mental health care and will not require any changes to current treatments/medications. The decision to start/stop any treatment/medications lies with your family and your providers.
No, the scanner is not radioactive.
You can spread these study sessions out over 12 months. We accommodate visits outside of work hours, during holidays, school breaks, and weekends. If you are under 17 y.o, we will only need the parent to attend the first 1-2 hours of the first session and 15 minutes on the second and third sessions. You only need only attend the 1st and 4th sessions in person for 1-2 hours. The remaining time can be divided into multiple visits either in person or over Zoom. 2nd and 3rd session can be split into 2 days in-person (2.5 hours/each day) for each session.
- 1st session: may last about 6 hours.
- 2nd and 3rd sessions: 4- 4.5 hours
- 4th session: 3.5 – 4 hours

- Any additional session entails an additional $40 compensation.
