Study Background
This is a research study for patients with a pulmonary condition known as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Study participants will use 2 real or sham air purifiers in the home for a year and will provide information about their respiratory health through study visits and questionnaires. As part of this study, participants will have the opportunity to help researchers understand if the use of air purifiers in the home affects the respiratory health of people with COPD.
This study is funded by the National Institutes of Health and involves doctors at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Previous studies suggest that air pollution may be harmful for people with COPD. However, it is unknown if air purification with commercial HEPA filters is beneficial for people with this condition.

Study Background

Additional Information
Qualified participants:
- Have a physician diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema or chronic bronchitis
- 40 years or older
- Former smoker
- Have had previous lung function testing
- Don’t have advanced cancer or end-stage disease
- Not planning to move out of current home within next 15 months
This study is a clinical trial that would involve 2 visits to the BIDMC Clinical Research Center in Boston (one year apart) and 3 visits to your home by research staff.
- At each of the 2 clinic visits, study staff will measure respiratory health with pulmonary function testing, a 6-minute walk test, and collect nasal samples and blood samples. Each clinic visit will be approximately 3 hours. At the home visits, study staff will measure lung function, take nasal samples and collect home air samples and dust samples. Throughout the study, participants will complete monthly surveys online or by phone about respiratory symptoms.
