Study Background

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) are investigating a type of breathing training. This breathing training is a physical exercise and can be related to meditation and other stress reduction methods which impact people’s sense of well-being and physical health.

We know that in general, practicing breathing techniques can change blood pressure and make people feel better, but we do not know which are the most effective types of breathing practices. This study will test three different ways of improving breathing and see how each works.

Findings from this clinical research study will determine the effects of the breathing practice daily for 12 weeks in regards to mental and physical states.

Participants will attend 2-3 study visits at UCLA. All study participants will receive a smart ring (Oura Ring) to track daily physiological changes and sleep quality.

  • Completing the breathing training procedure utilizing the POWERbreath device.
    • All study participants will be provided an Oura ring at baseline visit, and will be shown how to use the ring and the Oura app.
  • Attending post-intervention study visits after 12 weeks of intervention, and an optional 3-month follow-up study visit will also be conducted following the post-intervention study visit.
    • Each study visit will include the physiology examination.

Compensation is provided up to $345 for your participation.

At the end of the study all participants will be given a breathing training device to keep, and the option of keeping the Oura ring and blood pressure device.
